IT Infrastructure Guardians Ready For Power Crisis

NEWS UPDATE Auckland, New Zealand, Wednesday, August 08, 2001

New Zealand's IT Infrastructure Guardians Ready For Power Crisis Says IDC

Most of New Zealand's fifteen-odd data centres are ready for any power supply issues should they arise as a result of the developing power crisis, IDC reported today.

Internet data centres, or IDCs, are large sites which run vast amounts of the IT infrastructures of many of New Zealand's largest companies and are critical to the new smooth running of the New Zealand economy.

IT Market Intelligence firm IDC, who have recently completed a study of local data centres, says most of the players are well prepared for such eventualities, and are looking forward to demonstrating their value proposition. "24 by 7 is the raison d'être of data centres" said Michael Cranna, IDC's Consulting Manager. While we wouldn't list power cuts as one of the most potent of market drivers, its these kinds of unexpected contingencies which demonstrate the value of having a secure environment specialist provide you with a secure operating environment," Cranna said. Data centres also tend to be provided by companies whose names are well known, such as Telecom, IBM and Unisys, although lesser known players such as HDS, are also considered reliable providers.

However, Cranna recommends users hear it from the horse's mouth. "If you currently use a data centre, make sure they can demonstrate they have their own robust generation systems, not just batteries that will give them time to shut you down!"

IDC New Zealand has recently completed a report on the Internet Data Centre market in New Zealand, which it believes to be growing healthily. "In an industry where technology becomes obsolete quickly and is costly to upgrade, it can be a considerable cost saving to have those costs absorbed into a fixed monthly fee." said Cranna.

Moreover, a healthily growing iDC market also suggests New Zealand businesses are increasingly moving online. One of the key services an iDC can provide is a reliable 24X7 Web-presence. "As businesses move their operations to the Web, iDCs can provide the security and reliability necessary to maintain a consistent Web presence." Cranna said.

IDC estimates the data centre market to be around $88.0m in 2000, with growth at around 10% for the next three years.
