Farmers support Growerco

Growerco is gaining substantial farmer support for its proposed new integrated wool supply, sales and marketing company.

In recent days Growerco has held meetings in Masterton, Te Kuiti, Taumarunui, Taihape and Waipukurau, outlining the proposal to farmers. By 12 November, 17 meetings will have been held from Whangarei in the north to Mossburn in the south.

Company chairman, Sir Brian Lochore, says he has been encouraged by the support from growers, who realise the Growerco plan is a solid one which can lead the industry reform that growers overwhelmingly voted for last year after the McKinsey report.

“There’s been a pretty positive reaction from virtually everyone at the meetings,” Sir Brian said.

“It’s clear that growers want reform, and they want a plan they can invest in and that brings them together.

“The Growerco plan is well thought out, and has enough detail for growers to decide whether they are seriously interested in supporting it.”

Sir Brian said growers have been waiting for a proposal that will lead the industry forward.

“There are a lot of committed growers in New Zealand who want to be involved in the market. They want a future for their wool, and Growerco has provided them with a hard-nosed proposal they can support.”
