Longer Log Trucks A Major Safety Gain

Longer, lower log trucks are a sensible safety decision which will make roads a lot safer. We commend the Government for recognising the opportunity this innovative approach to log truck loading offered and acting on it,” Road Transport Forum Chief Executive Tony Friedlander says.

“Lowering log trucks clearly delivers substantial stability benefits. This is one of a series of measures the Forum has been actively developing with the LTSA, which will further improve the road safety performance of the trucking industry.

“Another major initiative being promoted by the trucking industry is the Operator Safety Rating System which we believe also has the potential to deliver significantly lower accidents involving trucks.”

Mr Friedlander says that he welcomed the Government’s approval of longer logging trucks in the face of fairly irrational opposition to any changes in truck dimensions. “Groups who are opposed to change on emotional grounds can make it difficult for the Government and the trucking industry to implement measures which clearly will improve road safety. Commonsense and safer roads are the winners in this decision to allow longer trucks on the road.”
