BIGGEST MAY SNOWFALL
IN "LIVING MEMORY" FOR MT RUAPEHU
Residents in
awe as Mt Ruapehu revealed in clearing weather
For more than a week, locals have been waiting in anticipation to see how much snow has fallen on Mt Ruapehu.
At 3pm today the clouds dispersed to reveal the biggest May snowfall anyone in the region says they can remember.
Both Whakapapa and Turoa ski areas now have 1metre + snow bases which are comparable to winter snow levels of late July last year.
Mike Smith of Ruapehu Alpine Lifts says the sight of Mt Ruapehu covered in heavy snow from top to bottom took his breath away.
"It is just unbelievable, the Pinnacles are loaded with snow. With winter looking like it's well and truly here we're looking forward to a fantastic season with both Whakapapa and Turoa planned to open on June 21."
