Confirmation of Howard's Position a Real Concern for Manufacturers.

"Australia's rejection of the Kyoto Protocol on economic grounds even though allowed perhaps the most generous increase in carbon emission under the protocol has to be a major concern for New Zealand's manufacturers," said John Walley, CEO of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association. "Almost half of New Zealand's manufacturing export returns, that is, those with high added value, are from Australia and the divergent paths on carbon emission policy will widen the competitive gap in this key market."

On the one hand we have Howard saying Kyoto will be a major economic negative despite allowable increases in carbon emission, and on the other we are told New Zealand will be better off despite being required to reduce carbon emissions.

"If there is one thing Australia is good at it's self interest," said Mr Walley, "New Zealand needs to learn that particular trick - economically Kyoto is a self inflicted shot in the foot."
