Hearing On Job Cuts At Kinleith

The Employment Relations Authority will on Monday (June 24) consider an application for an injunction to stop nearly 400 workers at the Kinleith pulp and paper mill losing their jobs.
Carter Holt Harvey, which is owned by the giant American company International Paper, plans to get rid of more than half the workforce at the Tokoroa mill. Stores and maintenance will be contracted out and the production process will be reconfigured. The company says that the job losses are needed to make the mill more internationally competitive.
The EPMU, which represents many of the workers, believes that there are other ways of meeting the company’s objectives. It will ask the company to stop the redundancies and to order it to negotiate with the workers.
Meanwhile, mediation between the union and the company continues.
