Workers to vote on mill settlement
Workers at Carter Holt Harvey’s Eves Valley sawmill are to vote on whether to accept a settlement of their long-running pay dispute.
More than 140 workers at the Nelson plant will decide at meetings on Monday whether to ratify a settlement reached by their union negotiators.
The dispute has been running for 20 months and has seen the workers take several strikes. It started when the company said that it wanted to stop providing transport for workers to get to work at the mill, 35 km out of Nelson.
The union for the majority of the workers, the EPMU, took the matter to the Employment Relations Authority, which said that they had a contractual right to the transport.
Union national secretary Andrew Little said that the settlement took account of the transport ruling. Details would be available after 7pm on Monday.
