New Website Targets Biotechnology Sector

New Website Targets Investment In Vibrant Biotechnology Sector

Industry New Zealand has launched a first step in providing a new website with comprehensive information on New Zealand’s biotechnology sector, aimed at attracting international investment.

The launch of the http:// http://www.biospherenz.com website is timed to coincide with the 8th International Pacific Rim Biotechnology Conference in Auckland for which Industry New Zealand is a sponsor.

The website contains information on a significant number of biotechnology industry organisations, research institutes and commercial businesses. The Government has identified biotechnology as a sector that is capable of growing to a critical mass of international relevance.

“New Zealand is well placed to be one of the world leaders in applying biotechnology which would lead to significant growth in the sector.

“But we need more investment and better co-ordination of resources and knowledge for that growth to continue.

“New Zealand’s international strengths lie in its unique disease-free animal health status, vigilant biosecurity regulations, international scientific connections and focus on an innovative, knowledge-based economy,” said Peter Lennox, Director Biotechnology at Industry New Zealand.

Annual export earnings for the biotechnology sector are predicted to reach between $2 billion and $7 billion by 2010.The sector’s influence is expected to benefit other areas of the economy as its applications spread across forestry, agriculture, specialist food production and pharmaceuticals. The website has sector-wide support from key organisations such as BIOTENZ and the New Zealand Biotechnology Association.

“The Biospherenz website is an investment in the future of the industry. It’s the beginning of a comprehensive gateway that will place key information – business size, product range and profiles, at the fingertips of potential investors and researchers,” said Bill Falconer, chairman of BIOTENZ.

“Throughout the world, biotechnology is gaining increasing importance as international producers develop its potential. As agriculture is a vital part of New Zealand’s economy, it is essential that we too, harness this knowledge in order to maintain our natural competitive advantage, “ said Mr Falconer.

Industry New Zealand is actively involved in initiatives such as the Biotechnology Conference to raise the biotechnology community’s international profile and is also developing a strong national network through sharing knowledge and best practice.

The International Pacific Rim Biotechnology Conference runs from November 17 to 20 and leading scientists, business people and government officials will be attending.
