The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has applauded Greater Wellington, the Wellington Regional Council, for being the first regional council to seriously investigate using its land for a wind farm.
Heather Staley, Chief Executive of EECA, said Greater Wellington is moving to secure the interests of its population and protect them against uncertain supply and potential energy price hikes.
"Greater Wellington has the interests of its region at heart in investigating making land in the Belmont Regional Park available for a wind farm, and it has our full support.
"Wind energy is going to be one of the fastest growing sources of renewable energy in the future and Wellington is one of the ideal regions to make the most of it. Compared with having a coal fired station in the backyard, wind farms are clean, green, sustainable and a great resource for the community.
"I hope more regional
councils demonstrate the commitment Wellington has shown in
promoting renewable energy," Ms Staley said.
