New Chair for Mohair NZ

Ross Aitken, from Greenpoint near Invercargill was elected Chairman of Mohair New Zealand at the annual general meeting in Christchurch recently.

Mr Aitken is a long-standing member of Mohair NZ and currently holds the position of Registrar, a role he will continue to maintain. He will be familiar to many Angora goat farmers being a prominent judge of angora animals and mohair fleece at various shows throughout the country.

Mr Aitken is looking forward to the challenge of his new role has acknowledged the contribution of outgoing chair Sue Atkins.

"Sue was a prime mover for Mohair NZ to become an Industry Group of Federated Farmers of New Zealand (Inc). This move has given Mohair NZ credibility and the resources to contest proposals that would otherwise have decimated the goat industry in New Zealand.

"Sue was also instrumental in driving the Goat Breed Research Programme a comprehensive research programme in conjunction with WRONZ identify breeding traits in goats that will produce top commercial animals.

"I will continue the good work that Sue has started and while Mohair New Zealand represents the Angora breed I want to help incorporate all other goat breeds in the Farm Monitoring programme that is about to commence."
