Primary Wool viable option for Merino growers

Primary Wool viable option for Merino growers

Primary Wool Cooperative Ltd offers a real alternative for Merino wool growers frustrated at continuing change in their industry.

Primary Wool's South Island manager, Rob Cochrane, says Merino growers have in the past enjoyed intense competition from companies wanting to handle their wool, but with some of that competition now removed, a solid farmer-owned company with nearly 50 years of successful trading behind it offers them the only real alternative.

"Primary Wool has always offered merino wool growers the opportunity to sell via its auction catalogue, but as changes occur within the Merino industry this season, we're becoming an increasingly attractive option," he says.

"Merino wool growers are specialists in growing top wool and we are specialists in providing cost effective, personal service. Primary Wool knows what growers expect and we're committed to living up to that expectation."

Primary Wool staff have considerable experience with Merino wool as well as mid-micron and crossbred wools, and can provide unbiased, expert technical and marketing advice to all growers.

As well, there are serious cost savings to be made compared with other selling methods, by utilising Primary Wool's nationwide warehousing and sales facilities. Furthermore grower/shareholders enjoy enhanced returns through participation in Primary Wool's rebate and discount structure.

Primary Wool is a national cooperative, so Merino growers from any part of the country can consign their wool directly to the nearest Primary Wool store. In the South Island, the wool remains at the chosen facility with grab samples only sent to the Primary Wool sample display floor in Christchurch. North Island Merino wool is shipped to Christchurch for processing, display and subsequent sale.

Rob Cochrane says Primary Wool can provide all the services Merino growers require, and growers might be surprised at the benefits that can be returned to them as shareholders.

"For a relatively small investment to become a shareholder in Primary Wool, growers can be part of a real cooperative and reap the rebate and profit distribution rewards, as well as having a valuable asset for the future," he says.
