Massive New Supermarket Distribution Centre Opens In Mangere

Precision organisation lies behind your local supermarket and you can see this in action at Progressive Enterprises’ new enlarged Mangere Distribution Centre. (MDC)

This $28 million dollar centre is the size of 10 rugby fields and operates around the clock, every day of the week with three shifts, each of 100 staff. From here, 70 percent of the goods you buy in your supermarket are distributed to 153 supermarkets in the North Island.

The through-put takes a bit of getting your head around: 700,000 cartons of groceries are distributed each week 120 trucks in each day 130 trucks out each day 26,947 kilometres of toilet tissue a week 52 tonnes of jam a week 306,115 packets of potato chips a week 64,029 cans of baked beans a week 283, 593 litres of beer a week

Progressive Enterprises’ Managing Director Ted van Arkel says “this centre is of a scale that ensures we can deliver better prices and value for our customers.”

The centre at 70 Favona Road, Mangere will be opened by Prime Minister Helen Clark at 11.00am on Friday, 8 August, 2003.
