Maori Language Radio Broadcasts Sports Awards

National Maori language radio service Ruia Mai will broadcast live from the 2003 Trillian Trust Maori Sports Awards this month (Nov) for the 10th year in a row.

Presenters Piripi Taylor and Ngarimu Daniels will co-host the three-hour show from 6pm to 9pm at the Auckland Showgrounds on Saturday, November 29.

Ruia Mai general manager Pere Maitai says the programme will feature highlights from the black-tie ceremony including award presentations, stage entertainment and on-the-spot interviews with leading Maori personalities from all spectrums of society as well as profiles of the awards, finalists and scholarship winners.

The theme of this year's awards is 'Te Maru o Mahuika' and a special table has been set aside for Maori women sporting champions from the past.

Finalists have been chosen from more than 200 nominations in 11 categories including coach and administrator of the year, junior and senior sportsman and sportswoman of the year, sportsperson of the year with a disability, and the supreme award - the Albie Pryor Memorial Sportsperson of the Year Award.

A new award - 'Tiori' - will acknowledge the achievements of an individual sportsperson who has consistently represented the highest values of sporting excellence. More than $30,000 in scholarships from SFRITO, AUT and CEGs will also be presented on the night.

Ruia Mai is part of Ngati Whatua-owned Mai Media Limited which also operates Mai FM 88.6 in Auckland, Mai FM 96.7 in Rotorua and Mai FM 97.8 in Whangarei as well as the Maori record label, Mai Music.
