Construction site fatality reinforces importance of building control regime

The Building Industry Authority (BIA) today endorsed the decision of the Auckland City Council to prosecute a developer for failing to comply with the conditions of their building consent, resulting in the tragic death of a site worker.

“It is encouraging to see the provisions of the Building Act being used in this way. It sends a strong message to industry that they absolutely must comply with the conditions imposed by Councils when building consents are issued”, said BIA Chief Executive John Ryan.

“The Building Bill currently being considered by Parliament will at a number of levels strengthen even further the building control regime. For example, it proposes the licensing of building practitioners, which will help lift performance on building sites and ensure appropriate practices are followed.”

“In the meantime the BIA urges those involved in building and construction to comply with the conditions of their consents, adhere to the wider requirements of the Building Act and place a high priority on health and safety measures.”
