Innovative Environmental Response Trailer

04 May 2004

Innovative Environmental Response Trailer

Following a major sewer overflow that occurred earlier this year, Excell Corporation and Manukau Water realised significant improvements to rate payer service could be achieved by developing a practical unit that could promptly deal with sewer overflows and other environmental incidents.

As a result a highly effective “Environmental Response Trailer” that carries all necessary equipment to take care of these events was created.

Fitted out with specialist equipment for containing sewer overflows into streams and water courses, the unit also carries systems that allow contaminated water to be pumped into tankers or back into the sewer downstream of the overflow.

Pollution signs to make the public aware of the incident are also included, as well as a Hynds Spill Response Kit for dealing with oil or diesel spills. The Environmental Response Trailer is compact enough to be towed by a car.

“As a result of closer liaison and discussions with the Auckland Regional Council Pollution Control Officers, the emphasis in dealing with environmental incidents has been shifted towards containment of overflows even before attempting to clear the blockage or overflow point,” said Mr Simon Porter, Operations Manager for Manukau Water.

“It was deemed essential to have all the necessary containment and pumping equipment readily accessible in a compact unit to minimise any impact on the environment.”

“Excell have a very strong partnership with both our clients and key suppliers,” said Mr Tim Gibson, National Water & Drainage Manager for Excell Corporation. “Together we are able to pool our intellectual talent and develop innovative solutions to meet client’s needs.”

Hynds Environmental also worked with Excell Corporation to develop the Environmental Response Trailer.

“Hynds Environmental appreciates the opportunity to associate with these proactive, responsible organisations, the Hynds Environmental Spill Management products will help ensure that Excell Corporation is suitably equipped to protect our environment,” says Mr Craig Pearson, Product Manager for Hynds Environmental.

“It’s great to deal with organisations that recognise the need to have product and equipment for spills readily available,” said Mr Pearson.

Excell Corporation is committed to providing innovative service to their clients. The environmental response trailer not only adds value to Excell’s clients, but also addresses the needs of other stakeholders such as the ARC.

Most importantly, Excell can now respond more quickly to protect the environment for the public.
