Meat & Wool New Zealand, almost there

Meat & Wool New Zealand is officially one step closer to its July 1st start date, with legislation to undo the Meat Board Act having made it through the crucial Select Committee stage.

Meat & Wool New Zealand Acting CEO Cros Spooner says the Select Committee report is very positive with only a few recommended amendments to the original Bill being made.

“We are delighted that the Meat Board Restructuring Bill has made it through the Select Committee stage, with what are essentially only minor changes.”

Cros Spooner says the Select Committee report endorses all the work that Meat New Zealand and other organisations have done to ensure the best possible result for New Zealand farmers.

“This is really another example of the industry and Government working together to get a positive outcome.”

Spooner says with the Select Committee part now over, he is hopeful that Government maintains the momentum to progress the bill through the final stages in Parliament to meet the planned July 1st commencement date.

“This will enable the meat levy to change to the Commodities Levy Act (CLA), and Meat & Wool New Zealand will be able to start collecting the wool levy as well.”
