New Zealand Bee Industry Group Conference

The New Zealand Bee Industry Group’s conference will be held on 9 - 10 June at the Chancellor Resort, Main Street Methven.

The New Zealand Bee Industry Group (NZBIG) is an industry group of Federated Farmers of New Zealand (Inc), representing commercial and hobbyist beekeepers.

NZBIG Chairman, Milton Jackson will open the conference at 8.30am on Wednesday 9 June. Guest speakers include Dr Mark Goodwin of Hort Research and Chief Executive of South Pacific Seeds, John McKay who are both discussing pollination opportunities. Glen Neal from the New Zealand Food Safety Authority is discussing the regulatory environment of the bee industry, and Wayne Thomas from FMG will speak about insurance for beekeepers.

The conference will also consider the opportunities for obtaining a commodity levy to fund bee industry research. Nick Pyke, Chief Executive of the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) will describe the FAR levy process as one possible example.

The NZBIG conference will be held concurrently with the Grains Council of New Zealand conference, allowing the industry groups to discuss areas of mutual interest.
