Marlborough log barging approved to take logging trucks off roads

A Marlborough log barging proposal to reduce the number of logging trucks on Port Underwood Road has been approved by Transfund New Zealand.

This approval means Marlborough District Council will have Transfund assistance for the project, which comprises the transfer of logs by barge from Port Underwood to Shakespeare Bay, in Picton Harbour.

Funding of $392,000 for the project over a period of two years was approved at the Transfund Board meeting on Thursday.

Chair Dr Jan Wright says the project would reduce the number of logging trucks using Port Underwood Road by an average of 26 trucks per day, resulting in reduced road maintenance costs, reduced environmental impacts and increased safety.

This project was approved under Transfund's travel demand management, rail and barging activity class.
