Hospitality awards finalists announced

Judging for the Hospitality Association of New Zealand’s awards for excellence in 2004 has been completed, and finalists in ten categories announced.

The awards scheme is now in its seventh year. Over the years, increasingly sophisticated standards and a preponderance of South Island finalists have reflected a trend in the hospitality industry. Friendly hosts competing for the tourist dollar but at the same time looking after their ‘locals’ is a key to success, says Bruce Robertson, chief executive of HANZ.

The winners, including a supreme overall winner, will be announced at the Association’s Awards for Excellence dinner in Auckland on 6 October, as part of a three-day conference and trade fair showcase.

The finalists are: Cock & Bull Lynfield; The Copper Room, Takapuna; Jet Inn Hotel, Mangere; Waterside Bar, Gulf Harbour and O’Carroll’s Irish Bar (all Auckland); The Grand Chateau, Mt Ruapehu; Mazola’s Steak and Ale House, Hastings; Liquor Plus, Masterton; Whangamomona Hotel, Stratford; Beachcomber Motor Inn, Nelson; The Yacht Club, Picton; Warner’s Historic Hotel; Zydeco Café and Bar; and Belgian Beer Cafe Torenhof (all Christchurch); Southbridge Hotel, Canterbury; Edgewater Resort, Wanaka; New Orleans Hotel, Arrowtown; The Pub, Cromwell; Alice’s Restaurant, Bannockburn; and Super Liquor (Southland Tavern), Invercargill.
