ING appoints new CIO from UK

New Zealand financial services leader, ING (NZ) Limited, has appointed Rebecca Thomas to the position of Chief Investment Officer, based in Auckland.

A qualified barrister, she replaces previous CIO of seven years, David McClatchy, who was recently promoted to head ING’s investment management operation in Australia.

Ms Thomas joins ING with an impressive résumé of more than 15 years’ experience as an analyst, fund manager and CEO across the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and the USA. Widely regarded as one of the UK’s most outstanding achievers in the financial services industry, she is best known for turning London asset manager, Johnson Fry, from a ₤10 million business into a ₤60 million earner in three years.

During her stewardship, Johnson Fry was acquired by US-based global top-50 financial house, Legg Mason, with Ms Thomas continuing in her role as CEO for a further three years. More recently she has worked in a consultancy capacity and as a non-executive director for a number of UK companies.

ING Managing Director, Paul Fyfe, is delighted the company has been able to secure someone of her calibre and level of expertise to manage the investment operation in New Zealand. “Rebecca has a broad range of experience across all facets of investment management,” he says. “In addition, she has demonstrated a remarkable talent for business strategy, re-engineering and development.”
