Top companies, Business Leaders selected for 2004

The finalists for the annual Deloitte/Management magazine Top 200 Companies Awards have been announced for 2004.

Contenders for the title of Executive of the Year are last year’s winner, Ralph Waters, CEO of Fletcher Building, Don Elder, CEO of Solid Energy and Ralph Norris, chief executive and managing director, Air New Zealand.

Company of the Year will be decided between Fisher & Paykel Appliances, a finalist for this award last year, Fletcher Building, the winner of this category last year, and category newcomer, ZESPRI Group.

Three finalists also line up for the QBE Insurance Chairperson of the Year Award. They are Wayne Boyd, chair of Auckland International Airport, Shotover Jet Limited and Freightways Corporation; Rob Challinor, chair of Mighty River Power and a number of smaller boards such as Sheffield; and Dr Roderick Deane a former Executive of the Year Award winner and chair of Telecom, Fletcher Building and the newly formed ANZ/National Bank combo.

Other category finalists are:

Deloitte Emerging Enterprise Award: - Academic Colleges Group - Comvita - Snowy Peak

Colliers International Best Growth Strategy Award: - Fletcher Building - Port of Tauranga - Pumpkin Patch

AUT Business Ethics Award: - BP New Zealand, for its Triple Botton Line reporting and cleaner product initiatives - New Zealand Aluminium Smelters, for its Safe Work Environment practices - Untouched World, for its community involvement with the Blumine Island project through its Untouched World Foundation.

Marsh Most Improved Performance Award: - AFFCO Holdings - Navman - Sky Network Television

NZIM Young Executive of the Year Award: - Anushiya Ayingaran, general manager, corporate services, Nurse Maude Association - Steve Howse, general manager, Information Division, Livestock Improvement Corporation - Aolele Su’a Aloese, contracted to the Cook Island Government to redevelop their audit systems.

Judges for this year’s Top 200 Awards were Roger Kerr, director of Asia-Pacific Risk Management, Alison Paterson, chair of Landcorp Farming and deputy chair of Reserve Bank of New Zealand and Sandy Maier, an Auckland-based company director.

Judges for the NZIM Young Executive of the Year Award were Beverley Wakem, chair of LCoNZ and a director of Team Talk, Nick Calavrias, CEO, Steel & Tube Holdings and Garry Wilson, CEO of Accident Compensation Corporation.

Business ethics award judges were Rodger Spiller, director of the New Zealand Centre for Business Ethics and Sustainable Development, and Dick Hubbard, CEO, Hubbard Foods.

Award winners will be announced at the Deloitte/Management magazine Top 200 Awards dinner at the SkyCity Convention Centre on Thursday 25 November, 2004.
