CFRT Is An Independent Trust

On Monday 15 November, an article in the Dominion Post’s NZ Infotech section incorrectly portrayed the Crown Forestry Rental Trust as a Government agency.

The Crown Forestry Rental Trust (CFRT) is not a Government agency. CFRT is an independent Trust which assists Maori with claims to Crown forest licensed lands.

CFRT is using 3-D mapping technology to assist Maori claimants and the Waitangi Tribunal speed up the settlement of Treaty claims involving Crown forest licensed land, not Government.

Background

The Crown Forestry Rental Trust is an independent trust with equal numbers of Maori and Crown appointed Trustees. It receives no taxpayer funding.

The main purpose of Trust is the management and administration of interest earned from investment of rental proceeds from Crown forest licensed land.

It uses this interest to assist eligible Maori claimants in the preparation, presentation and negotiation of claims involving Crown forest licensed land before the Waitangi Tribunal.
