Salvation Army Christmas Brighter For Many

Christmas will be brighter for dozens of families this year thanks to Tauranga company Generation Developments.

For the second year running, Generation Developments will donate a large quantity of food for the Tauranga Salvation Army Christmas hampers.

Every visitor to their showhomes during November and December will be counted and one item of food will be donated in their honour.

Tauranga Salvation Army's Captain Clive Nicolson says Generation's donations are a "fantastic help".

"We make up hampers for families in need and with Generation's support we can give a lot extra to those who really need it," Captain Nicolson says. "Last year we gave hampers to almost 90 families and we hope to extend that number this year."

Generation Developments marketing manager Vicky Mills says they hope to donate at least 800 items of food to the Salvation Army, if their average showhome visitor trends continue through to December 24.

"This is our way of putting something back into the community," Mills says. "The things most of us take for granted on Christmas Day – like roasted chicken and ice-cream with fruit – are not as accessible for some people, so it's great to be able to help out at this time of year."

Throughout the year Generation Developments sponsors and supports a number of local community projects. Currently it is involved with both Otumoetai and Tauranga Boys' colleges fundraising golf tournaments and sponsorship of a number of other sporting teams.

Saxophonist Amanda Robertson of Otumoetai College has also been on the receiving end of Generation's generosity recently. The company is sponsoring her to travel to Hawaii in March next year to perform with her 42-piece concert band at the Pacific Basin Music Festival.

Generation's showhomes can be viewed at the Bluewater and Milford by the sea subdivisions in Papamoa, Parkside, Sherwood Vale and Ashmore in Hamilton.
