Caltex New Zealand looks to raise over $200,000 for World Vision tsunami relief efforts

Bid for a year’s worth of petrol and diesel, concert tickets, cruise around in the Vortex V8 promotional car and many other donated items in www.trademe.co.nz charity auctions

WELLINGTON, January 25, 2005 – Caltex New Zealand is going online today in its efforts to raise at least $200,000 for victims of the Boxing Day tsunami. It is running an online charity auction at the Caltex store (www.trademe.co.nz) where goods donated by Caltex, its staff, partners and suppliers are being auctioned from today until February 7th.

The company aims to raise $100,000 through the auctions and World Vision donation boxes placed in all 367 Caltex and Challenge retail sites and facilities nationwide. It will match this $100,000 with a further $100,000. A scheme to match all donations by Caltex and Challenge staff is also in place.

“We’ve had a fantastic response to our request for donations from our staff, partners and suppliers,” said Nick Hannan, country chairman, Caltex New Zealand Limited.

Items for auction in the first week include: two weeks cruising in the Caltex Vortex V8 demonstration car, packages of petrol and diesel for one year, a fridge full of Primo, a Fujifilm digital camera, tickets to a concert at Huka Lodge, sunglasses and automotive batteries. All auctions will start with a $1 reserve. Next week another range of eclectic items will be auctioned by the company.

“People across New Zealand have already donated very generously, but we’re asking them to dig deep again,” said Mr Hannan. “Caltex’s commitment to match this latest effort with a further $100,000 shows how keen we all are to assist the ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts in rebuilding the lives and infrastructure of the people in the region.”
World Vision’s Executive Director Helen Green said; “We’re thrilled with the funds raised so far in New Zealand. It’s going to be a long term process to get affected countries back on their feet. Ongoing efforts such as those through Caltex service stations nationwide are crucial to ensure the momentum is continued.”

“Caltex has combined great auction items with $1 reserves which guarantees a huge amount of interest by the 850,000 members of the Trade Me community,” said Sam Morgan, Trade Me general Manager. “It’s been humbling to see the way the online community have harnessed auctions to raise funds for the tsunami victims.”

ChevronTexaco, Caltex’s parent company, has donated $US1.24 million in cash, while Caltex operations across Asia have made significant contributions, including cash, water, products and employee time. More information can be found at http://inside.chevrontexaco.com/companyinfo/tsunami_relief/
