Pylon Opposition Grows Stronger

The second round of information meetings called by Transpower to discuss the proposed 440Kv transmission lines has resulted in even stronger opposition to the project affected people, David Graham, Chairman of New Era Energy said today.

In excess of 1000 people turned out for the six community meetings, in spite of the fact that many were precluded from attending because of distance from venues or inconvenient timing of meetings. "The NEE executive has been heartened by increased growth in funding and in membership as people realise the devastating affect the pylons will have on their lives" David Graham said.

"The lack of any meaningful response to the 3000 or so questions or comments that Transpower has received from the public has angered many people and drawn some forceful comments from irate individuals" David Graham said. "NEE does not condone any threats to staff of Transpower and believes that tensions which may exist could be defused if there was dialogue which gave each side the opportunity to have a proper input" he continued.

"The broad focus of NEE is to see that adequate power supplies do get to consumers wherever they live. However our immediate target is shooting down the belief that 400 kV lines are the only way to achieve this. We don't have the deep pockets of Transpower, but we do have some very well informed and determined people who will seek better solutions by whatever legitimate ways they can" David Graham concluded.
