Newspapers Number One in Revenue for 2004

The Newspaper Advertising Bureau is delighted with the newly released ASA report on industry revenue for 2004, which confirms a share increase from 37.1% to 38.1%, representing $101m in growth from $689m to $790m and reaffirms newspaper as number one in share. Director of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, Sonya Crosby says “$790 million is a fantastic revenue figure to have achieved and the result is testament to our industry members for a huge effort over the past twelve months. It is significant that print was the only traditional medium to have increased share during the period and newspaper had the largest increase overall”.

A collective marketing effort by the NAB and its individual members has seen strong focus on driving revenue growth for newspapers. Price alone had minimal impact on this growth. Rather new product offerings across the board are attracting advertisers; production capabilities especially in colour continue to evolve and deliver bigger, brighter and better use of space; while the development of creative opportunities in paper is starting to reap rewards.

“This is a medium that is created fresh everyday so it’s not just about a great sales effort. It’s about successfully managing the process from developing initiatives to planning, booking, billing through inventory management and actual delivery”, says Crosby.

This outstanding result speaks the confidence that agency and advertisers hold in newspapers as a powerful advertising vehicle. With a continued focus on educating, stimulating and creating passion for newspapers, we look forward as an industry to continuing this momentum.
