ADT Debuts Economical, High-Performance Anti-Theft Solution to Help Boost Profits of Food Retailers
May 25, 2005 - ADT, a subsidiary of Tyco Fire & Security, today announced the new Sensormatic UltraLane detection system, an aggressively-priced, aisle-based Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) solution for supermarkets and convenience stores intent on stopping store theft and boosting profits as a result.
The UltraLane detection system is based on 58 kHz Sensormatic UltraMax acousto-magnetic (AM) technology. With wider aisle and exit coverage along with smaller tags and labels, plus much better and more reliable detection rates, AM’s performance has proven itself superior to older electromagnetic (EM) and radio frequency (RF) technologies. And now that AM is cost-competitive with those technologies, it offers greater overall price-performance and value for the retailer.
The system’s sleek, open antenna design offers maximum shoplifting protection without compromising visibility, store aesthetics, customer checkout interactions, or shopping cart passage. Its wide coverage also offers tremendous configuration flexibility, including a dual aisle configuration that is most important in retail environments.
“We want to help food retailers regain their profitability,” said Ken Pascoe, General Manager for ADT. “Shrinkage of almost one percent of turnover may not sound like much, but for some food retailers that can be one-third of their profits. With our UltraLane system, they can better control shoplifting and boost the profits they retain for their shareholders.”

Features of the UltraLane system include alarm management and people-counting as well as integration with point-of-sale and video surveillance systems. Data collected by these means can be used to stop forms of internal theft such as “sweethearting” (when clerks ring up lower prices for goods) and to better manage store operations, optimize staff levels, and even gauge store traffic resulting from outside promotions.
