Kapiti Takes Premium Category & Kids’ Award in National Ice Cream Awards

Kapiti has come away from this year’s National Ice Cream Awards (on Friday night) with two prestigious titles, being the overall winner of the premium ice cream category and also taking the much-envied Kids’ Choice award.

The title for best Premium Ice Cream in New Zealand went to Kapiti’s Gingernut, confirming Kapiti’s position as the top manufacturer and exporter of super premium ice cream.

In a first for Kapiti, its Triple Chocolate took the Kids’ Choice for 2005, as judged by a panel of Napier school children, assisted by the national judges. (Children from the location where the award function is held judge this category.)

Chief Executive of Kapiti Fine Foods Greig Shearer says that in winning the premium and the Kids’ Choice categories, the Kapiti ice cream brand has shown, “it truly covers the field, with high quality and taste now the expectation of all age groups”.

“We are achieving our goal of producing for all consumers, including children, the highest quality ice cream.”

The two category winners topped off a night where Kapiti won three gold medals and five silvers. The golds were: Spicy Apple, Fig & Honey, and Gingernut.

Greig Shearer says he is very satisfied by Kapiti’s performance, as the company is still one of the smaller players in New Zealand’s competitive ice cream business.

“We are most gratified in winning in our core, premium category as well as the Kids’ Choice which is one of the most coveted in the business, as kids are pretty tough judges.

“The results are a great accolade for our ice cream team which is always challenging itself to improve product quality. These are reward for much hard work over the past 12 months.

“Ice cream is a very competitive business, as New Zealand is blessed with a vast variety of ice cream flavours and textures. You have to stay on your game to consistently satisfy consumers, and the awards point to our success in doing this,”

Kapiti attributes its success to the way it controls all of its processes from farm to the consumer to deliver new and trusted products; as well as the way it continues to meet its own high expectations for premium quality.

In a few months Kapiti will begin operating a new stand-alone ice cream plant using technology new to this part of the world. This is aimed at lifting the premium quality even higher again, and will help satisfy the level of market demand for Kapiti Ice Cream.

Greig Shearer says Kapiti’s focus remains on driving to meet its future needs through control of products from farm-to-consumer, supported by innovation and the application of technology that will enhance the quality of its products and ultimately increase consumer trust.
