Blast Off With Cosmos Magazine On Monday August 1

AUCKLAND, July 29 /MediaNet International-AsiaNet/ --

Cosmos, an innovative new popular science magazine, goes on sale nationally in New Zealand on Monday, August 1 at newsagents and selected bookstores.

Cosmos is cool, entertaining and informative: it takes New Zealanders to the cutting edge of science, from the innermost secrets of the human body to the outer reaches of the Universe.

“Cosmos tells the story of science, and that means the story of people, their ideas and discoveries,” says Editor Wilson da Silva. “We’ll make Cosmos beautiful to look at, the kind of magazine you would want to collect but, above all, we’ll make it a cracking good read.”

The big feature stories in the 112-page August issue of Cosmos cover the spectrum of popular science, including two stories with a New Zealand focus:

The CSI Effect: Is DNA profiling foolproof … or full of holes? It’s a wonder tool of forensic science; but DNA profiling has also put innocent people behind bars. Is the science really that good? Or do we believe it too readily? And can DNA evidence be tampered with? Sydney medical journalist Alex Wilde investigates.

The man from the 11th dimension

He thinks in 11 dimensions and is trying to complete Einstein’s unfinished work: a ‘theory of everything’. He is leading theoretical physicist Michio Kaku, and he’s as charming as he is imposing. Melbourne science writer Elizabeth Finkel discovers.

The race is on to save lives, improve memories and even help people live longer. Nowhere is the avalanche of interest in the magic of stem cells and therapeutic cloning – and the serious money to back it – as intense as in California, reveals Elizabeth Finkel.

Lord of the Long White Cloud

New Zealand's skies were once ruled by the most powerful bird that ever lived. How could it have died out? Rochelle Christian has theories.

Last stand of the kakapo

They're one of the world's rarest birds, living on an isle off New Zealand's imposing southern coast. Local New Zealand journalist Kim Griggs makes some new feathered friends.

The August issue of Cosmos goes on sale nationally on Monday, August 1 at newsagents and selected bookstores, RRP $9.95. Cosmos is published by Luna Media Pty Ltd, a new specialist publishing house in Sydney, Australia. For further information: www.cosmosmagazine.com
