For The Fair Or The Fowl At The Auckland Food Show

For The Fair Or The Fowl At The Auckland Food Show
- Tegel Foods puts the focus on thighs

Calling all foodies with a sense of fun and adventure. Are your legs a talking point? If so, then Tegel Foods wants to hear from you. Tegel is mounting a search for Auckland’s most distinctive pair of legs.

A feature stand at this year’s Auckland Food Show, August 5 to 7, will be The Tegel Challenge, a competition to find the owner of the best set of “chicken legs”, “meaty thighs”, or even “decorative legs”.

Category Manager Geraldine Oldham says that in staging The Tegel Challenge, Tegel is seeking to create greater awareness and interest in the option of using chicken thighs in many chicken recipes.

“Chicken thighs are one of cooking’s best kept secrets, and one that Tegel wants to share. They are incredibly versatile and easy to use, as well as being a great source of low-fat protein with only 3.19gm of fat per 100gm serve.

“Another reason to use chicken thighs is that they have the highest iron levels found in the range of chicken cuts, a factor that makes them darker than breast meat.

“Tegel will use its presence at the Food Show to highlight these features of chicken thigh meat.”

Geraldine Oldham says that chicken thighs have become a favourite with food writers and cooks in-the-know because of their succulence and flavour.

She says the Tegel Challenge is definitely not a beauty contest. “It’s about having fun, and not taking things too seriously. We’re calling for entrants who have a sense of adventure, and who aren’t afraid to show their legs, for better or worse.

“Prizes will be awarded on the basis of distinction. We’re not looking for the most beautiful pair of legs – we want to see legs of all shapes and sizes - the brawn and the scrawn, the fair and the fowl, or the most decorative. Everybody is welcome. All you need to enter the challenge is a pair of legs. “

Tegel will fit out its Auckland Food Show stand with a photography booth, so that challenge entrants’ legs can be photographed in privacy.

Aside from entering at the Food Show people will also be able to enter the challenge by submitting a photograph of their legs either by email or post.

For those too “chicken” to enter the challenge during the Food Show entries will be accepted by post and email until 12 August, 2005

A prize will be awarded for best in each section - “chicken legs”, “meaty thighs” and “decorative legs”. Prizes include interactive cooking class vouchers, dining for two, and vouchers for one of Auckland’s favourite kitchenware stores. The total value of prizes will be $1500.
