Finalists Announced in Builders Annual Awards

National finalists announced in Registered Master Builders PlaceMakers annual awards

The Top 100 National Gold Reserve Award finalists in the Registered Master Builders PlaceMakers 2005 House of the Year and Commercial Awards were announced today, highlighting the quality of workmanship by registered master builders.

Building companies awarded National Gold Reserve status range from those who constructed the new technology centre at Greymouth High School, the Glen Innes Police Station in Auckland, an elegant renovation of a Victorian villa in Wellington and a new home built for under $200,000 in Christchurch.

These National Gold Reserve Award finalists were judged from 570 entrants in 20 local competitions that have taken place throughout New Zealand between May and July 2005.

Registered Master Builders Federation chief executive Chris Preston said that the awards structure provided a national benchmark and quality mark system that builders can use to promote their businesses and property owners can recognise and trust.

“The Gold Reserve winners represent the very best New Zealand’s building industry has to offer and the judges will have a tough job selecting the national winners in each category and the PlaceMakers Supreme Winner,” Mr Preston said.

David Worley, chief executive of principal sponsor PlaceMakers said these awards demonstrate the consistently high level of workmanship delivered by registered master builders.

“The judging system ensures we know that a property awarded a Gold in Queenstown has reached the same standard as a Gold presented in Auckland or New Plymouth. The quality mark creates a tangible stamp for builders and can be used to promote building excellence. This is vital in the building industry at this time,” he said.

Residential winners will be judged again by a national panel to determine the 13 national Category Winners, the 2005 National Registered Master Builder of the Year – Commercial and the 2005 National Registered Master Builder of the Year – Residential and the 2005 PlaceMakers Supreme Award. These will be announced at a gala event in Auckland on Saturday, October 15.

National residential judging begins at the end of August and will run until the end of September.

The Registered Master Builders PlaceMakers House of the Year and Commercial Awards competition comprises the following categories: PlaceMakers Renovation Awards (two price categories under and over $250,000) New Homes Awards (six price categories ranging from under $200,000, to over $1 million) The Builder’s Own Home Award, James Hardie Show Home Award and the Housing New Zealand Community Development Award LifeStyle Awards for living solutions, structural assurance, energy efficiency, bathrooms and kitchens Commercial awards including three price categories ranging from under $2 million to over $5 million
