Financial authors to talk ‘commonsense finance’

NZ’s bestselling financial authors to talk ‘commonsense finance’ on the North Shore

New Zealand’s own bestselling financial authors in common sense finance and personal wealth, Martin Hawes and Joan Baker, will share a stage for the first time when they present a free seminar at the North Harbour Stadium on September 7.

The seminar comes at a time when New Zealand’s first adult financial literacy survey is being conducted and, according to Retirement Commissioner, Diana Crossan, more than 30 per cent of New Zealanders lack confidence with money, and have issues with debt.

The seminar - by the authors of books such as ‘Get Rich, Stay Rich’ and a raft of other titles covering family trusts, taxation, property investment, shares and a guide for New Zealanders to manage their everyday finances – is sponsored by Albany based Insurance Lending Group and AMP.

‘Smart Women, Smart Money’, by Joan Baker is for women of all ages and will include content on:

* Earn Interest or Pay Interest * What’s Different for Women? * Budget Rich or Budget Poor * Dealing with Life’s Little Events * 10 Commandments for Women

‘Rich and Free – Creating Wealth for the Life You Want’, by Martin Hawes is aimed at people with high aspirations and will cover topics such as:

* How to become wealthy * Turbo charge with other people’s money * Visions and goals * The ‘Get Rich Stay Rich’ Plan

Insurance and Lending Group Director, Greg Frittelli, said the company had established a solid client base on the North Shore since its launch in 2004, and was keen to ‘give something back to the community’ through this sponsorship.

“In their book ‘Get Rich, Stay Rich’, Martin and Joan identify a number of things that financially successful people have in common. One of these is ‘they know about things like money and tax’.

“Too many of us have avoided trying to understand the details about why and how money works. It’s fairly basic and the more people try to understand things like money and tax, the better off they will be.

“This is our way of facilitating that,” said Frittelli.

Hawes and Baker say that the other things that financially successful people have in common include:

* They are not ego driven – they are not concerned at what other people might think, and are happy to invent unglamorous industries.

“They know there is money in dirt, and are happy to go without the toys many of us think are necessary – but simply make us look good in the eyes of others.”

* They are not conspicuous in their consumption. “They don’t live in expensive houses and drive flashy cars.”

* They are independent minded – they do not move with the herd.

* They have good long term relationships and marriages.

* They know about things like money and tax.

* They take a position – they do not hedge their bets.

* They see both sides of a situation.

* They are persistent.

* They are well connected – not that they move with the right set, rather they have a good network of contacts in their field.

“Above all, the two things that set successful people apart are:

* Hard work; and

* Homework
