Credit Unions Focus on their Future at the 43rd AGM

INVERCARGILL, THURSDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 2005 – Over 200 Credit Union delegates will be in Invercargill from 15 – 17 September to attend the 43rd Annual Conference and AGM of the New Zealand Association of Credit Unions.

The conference celebrates the strong financial year the industry has enjoyed and recognises key Credit Union people that have made significant contributions to the industry.

“We are proud to announce another year of record growth within the industry despite increasing competition from other non-bank financial institutions”, says Doug McLaren, Chief Executive, New Zealand Association of Credit Unions. “The 40 Member Credit Unions, with total assets in excess of $505 million, now represent 166,000 New Zealanders nationwide”.

Doug McLaren adds, “Our mutuality keeps us focused on providing leading-edge financial and insurance products and services to Credit Unions members at low or no fees. This enables us to continue helping people of modest means and ensuring that all communities, regardless of size, can have access to essential financial services”.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Focus on our Future”. Mayor of Invercargill will open the event on Friday 17 September, followed by a number of prominent speakers such as, Max Quinn, Steve Gurney and Dr Alan Bollard.

The main event of conference is the Annual Dinner and Award Presentation on Saturday 17 September. Selected by a panel of their peers, a Credit Union will be awarded the prestigious “People Helping People” Award.

New Zealand Association of Credit Unions

The Association was established in 1961 as the Credit Union League and later changed its name in 1989. It acts as the main trade association for Credit Unions in New Zealand and provides a range of products and services to it Member Credit Unions. Its 40 Member Credit Unions operate in more than 95 locations nationwide serving over 166,000 New Zealanders. The Association is a member of the World Council of Credit Unions and an affiliate of the Credit Union Services Corporation of Australia Ltd.
