Ultra wide band technology opportunities
The Ministry of Economic Development has introduced a General User Licence (GUL) for vehicular radar at 24 GHz on a ‘non-interference, non-protected’ basis until 30 June 2013, following the release of a report on spectrum allocations for the new technology.
While more definitive regulations will be considered once international standards become mature, other interim spectrum arrangements have been made to accommodate ultra wide band (UWB) technology. These include interim radio licences for UWB imaging devices and trial licences for UWB communication applications with low potential to cause interference, on a case-by-case basis.
Ministry of Economic Development’s Radio Spectrum Policy and Planning Manager, Brian Miller says there is widespread, positive interest in new UWB applications.
“The interim arrangements will enable New Zealand firms to reap the benefits from new and innovative solutions using this new technology as early as possible, while minimising its risks to existing services.”
The report comes as a result of widespread consultation on UWB with industry and other stakeholders and is available at http://www.med.govt.nz/rsm/spp/uwb/index.html.
