The Overlander Steam Journey success

A huge success is how Tranz Scenic describes its Overlander Steam Journeys on the North Island Main Trunk Line. The fully booked last journey took place on Saturday when the daily service between Wellington and Auckland was pulled by a steam locomotive for part of the journey.

Tranz Scenic has used one of only two remaining 1927 WAB class steam engines to pull the Overlander between Feilding and Ohakune every Saturday over the last three months.

Ross Hayward, Group General Manager Rail Passenger, says “Each of the eight steam engine trips have been extremely popular and was enjoyed by all that travelled as well as those who simply came out to witness the historical event”

“Interest from the public exceeded our expectations which proves there is a market for excursions such as this on an ongoing basis.”

Tranz Scenic is currently working with Feilding &District Steam Rail to run similar excursions on the Overlander again in 2006.
