Record Payouts For Melbourne Cup
Makybe Diva’s record performance at the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday was not the only record broken with the TAB paying out punters more than on any other single day in the entire TAB’s history.
A record total of $13.4 million was due to be paid out from the day and the TAB expects that it will pay out on at least 250,000 winning tickets, thought to be the highest ever on one day.
Total betting on the Melbourne Cup was $8.6 million, up $936,000 on last year’s Cup.
“Makybe Diva’s win and Xcellent’s placing made Melbourne Cup Day 2005 one of the best ever for New Zealand punters,” says New Zealand Racing Board Racing Manager Michael Dore. “It was a great day all round.”
