David Kirk Delighted for NZ
Former All Black Captain and now CEO of John Fairfax Pty David Kirk, who held aloft the World Cup in 1987, says New Zealand winning the right to host the 2011 Rugby World Cup is fantastic news.
“Like many others I thought Japan may be the favourite but Jock Hobbs and his team, along with crucial support from Prime Minister Helen Clark, have obviously done an astounding job in convincing the IRB delegates that New Zealand could host an outstanding event.”
“I remember back in 1987 when NZ hosted the inaugural World Cup how New Zealanders got right behind it and what an amazing buzz there was around the whole country. Rugby has moved a long way since then and the 2011 event will be a major event for the country that will bring widespread benefits both sporting and economic.
“I look forward to being at Eden Park to watch the All Blacks in the 2011 final.”
