First ISO certified translators in Australasia

Press Release - 28 March 2006

Attn: Business reporter

The little company that could, did

First translation agency in Australasia to be ISO9001:2000 certified

“We are the ‘little company that could’” says PAEN Communications Ltd Director Rachel Wike. The PAEN team is celebrating this week as they have just been awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification, making PAEN the first translation agency in Australia or New Zealand to be awarded this prestigious certification.

“Like the little train engine in the kids’ story, we just keep on working hard! And our client base grows as people discover real quality and service without an extortionate price tag,” says Rachel.

The company specialises in translation and offers a range of language services, from interpreters and multilingual staffing to voice-overs and typesetting. After registering the company in July 2003, Rachel and co-director Dr Andreas Ernst started out on an old laptop at the kitchen table but today have offices in Auckland, Sydney and Berlin. It’s been a hard road as PAEN’s service offering meant working around the clock and sleep became a hard-won prize. “By the time I had my baby in June 2005 I knew all about sleepless nights! Thankfully with our overseas offices we can now offer 24-hour service and fast turnaround without sacrificing our sleep,” says Rachel.

The Berlin office, opened in January 2006, has helped to solidify and grow the company’s base of German clients such as PUMA, Faber-Castell and Siemens. Innovative technology such as internet telephony and video calling means all team-members worldwide can keep in touch – and enjoy the view from the Berlin office window!

The ISO 9001 process has been a real challenge for the still-small company. “But it’s really helped to pull our socks up. As the company grows and the directors can no longer personally control all aspects of a project, it’s important to set our quality practices in stone. Now all team members know exactly how to manage a project from start to finish with quality as the ultimate goal,” says Rachel.
