Mark Ngata: New GM of Ngati Porou Seafoods Ltd

The south’s loss is the East Coast’s gain today with the appointment of Mark Ngata as general manager of Ngati Porou Seafoods Ltd.

Mr Ngata has been operations manager for Ngai Tahu Fisheries since 1999 where he managed wetfish, lobster, abalone, shellfish and off-shore operations.
Announcing the appointment, Ngati Porou Seafoods chairman Whaimutu Dewes said he was extremely pleased to engage a person of Mark’s attributes and experience.

“He has immense industry experience and has built valuable networks that will benefit Ngati Porou and the other industry members. Mark will take over from initial general manager Ngarangi Bidois who, before taking some time out to add to her young family, has done a great job of establishing systems and relationships for the business.”

Mr Ngata, a former Gisborne policeman, is excited about returning to Ngati Porou to work in the seafood industry.

“At this time, with the return of the settlement assets and the opportunity to build value for the tribally owned company group, I am really looking forward to helping to move the businesses forward. Now we all move to a new level and new challenges.”

Mr Ngata has been involved in the seafood industry for 15 years including 10 in Angola, Namibia and South Africa. He worked for the United Nations in Namibia before being employed with a large fishing company focusing on its wetfish, lobster and shellfish harvesting and processing operations.

He and his Namibian wife have three children.

Ngati Porou Seafoods Ltd is the new asset holding company established by the Porou Ariki Trust which, together with Te Runanga o Ngati Porou, is the Mandated Iwi Organisation for the receipt of Ngati Porou fisheries assets.
