Hautaki comments on Commerce Commission’s Intention to Review Mobile Market

Hautaki, the commercial arm of the pan Maori Trust, Te Huarahi Tika, has called upon the Government to fix the competition framework of the mobile market in conjunction with the changes it has announced for the broadband market.

Hautaki, which has been in a 5-year partnership with Econet Wireless NZ Ltd, has had serious concerns about the competition framework of the New Zealand mobile telecommunications market since 2001, when it made its first submission to the Select Committee.

“Hautaki is encouraged that both the Government and the Commerce Commission have signalled an intention to resolve the significant ongoing impediments to competition in the mobile market. However, these problems have been in full view and costing New Zealand consumers for several years now. They need to be resolved urgently,” said Bill Osborne, Chairman of Hautaki.

“Hautaki urges the Government to introduce the changes necessary to stimulate competition and bring down prices in the mobile sector alongside the changes it has announced for broadband,” said Mr Osborne.
