Te Ohu Kaimoana, the Maori Fisheries Trust, has initiated the process to appoint directors to the board of the Trustee, giving iwi the first opportunity to determine their own representation in an organisation of this sort.
The electoral college system, Te Kawai Taumata, was outlined in a letter to Recognised Iwi Organisations and Mandated Iwi Organisations this week.
‘The fisheries allocation process will be largely completed before the new Board sits in the new financial year, so the focus will be on the next phases – fisheries management and sound stewardship,’ said Peter Douglas, CEO of Te Ohu Kaimoana.
Te Ohu Kaimoana will be available to meet with the electoral college groups to provide assistance, if required.
