Flotech wins important project

Rising New Zealand based engineered solutions provider finds a common love of rugby helps to beat off North American competition and win a big South African project.

South Africa, like New Zealand, is grappling with issues of decreasing energy supply and increasing energy demand.

As part of the ongoing solution, multi-national company Mondi Business Paper is building a new power plant in its Richards Bay paper plant, just north of Durban. The power plant features a GE, LM2500+ Sprint gas turbine, generating some 25 MW of power for the plant.

Due to insufficient and varying gas supply pressure, Mondi required a customised fuel gas compressor to ensure the required gas delivery pressure to the turbine would enable the power plant to run efficiently.

Highly regarded Auckland based engineered solutions provider Flotech was invited, along with the cream of the North American suppliers, to bid for the work. After proving that they were able to compete with the North American market in terms of technical innovations and quality of delivery, Flotech won the significant international business based on the strength of their relationship. Director of Compression Technology Stephen Rowntree was able to seal the deal over the phone while on the rollercoaster at Dreamworld on the Queensland Gold Coast during a brief holiday!

Rowntree said, “While an ability to deliver a customised solution remains the major differentiating factor for Flotech, the mutual love of rugby provided an all important common ground. We showed we were not just another name on a proposal but real people with similar interests, proving that rugby is an international language. After identifying the best solution for the project, we developed a friendly banter, based on the differing fortunes of the All Blacks and the Springboks that made this one of our most enjoyable jobs yet”.

Signed in October 2005 and finished in June 2006, the NZD$800,000+ deal resulted in the 17 tonne customised compressor package being shipped to South Africa on the 10th of June for install and commissioning.

With a smoothly run project and an engineered solution that meets all of their needs Mondi have said that they will recommend Flotech for all similar work in future.

The package is due to arrive into Durban this weekend and Flotech representatives are now on their way to South Africa to oversee the installation and carry out the plant commissioning, not to mention watching some Tri-Nations rugby with their counterparts at Mondi.

This could be the beginning of another beautiful rugby friendship, and it is yet another impressive international export feather in the cap for Flotech.
