Morton Estate Selected as Wine of Choice for English Royalty

When English royalty came together with Hollywood movie stars in the weekend for one of the highlights of the English social calendar, they were drinking New Zealand’s own Morton Estate wines.

Cartier International Polo Week offers a week of first class polo action, culminating in two spectacular polo matches on Cartier International Day (Sunday, July 30).

This year the main match saw a top polo quartet from New Zealand play the England team in the Coronation Cup – the highlight of Cartier International Day.

The organisers of the Coronation Cup at Windsor Park’s Guards Polo Club wanted to provide a wine from the visiting team’s home country.

Morton Estate’s Director, Sales & Marketing, Fiona MacDiarmid says that Morton Estate is a long time supporter of polo in New Zealand and was approached by the Guards Polo Club to submit a range of wines for tasting.

“They were so impressed with the quality of the Morton Estate range that they chose it as the wine of choice for the whole competition which extends throughout the week – known as Cartier Week.”

The selected wines included Morton Estate Riverview Chardonnay, Stone Creek Sauvignon Blanc, White Label Pinot Noir, The Mercure Merlot Cabernet blend and Brut Sparkling.

While the Kiwi team was defeated by England 9-7 in the Coronation Cup, Ms MacDiarmid says the high profile event was a spectacular showcase for New Zealand and Morton Estate wines.

“This event is attended by the who’s who of British society, including Princes Charles, Harry and William, rock legends and Hollywood movie stars. It truly is one of the most glamorous and prestigious days in the British sporting and social calendar so it is a real testament to the quality of Morton Estate that we were chosen as the wine of choice.”

This was the fourth time that New Zealand and England have met in the historic Coronation Cup, played in the Windsor Castle gardens.

The New Zealand team included Simon Keyte (Morrinsville), Cody Forsyth (Clevedon) John Paul Clarkin (Cambridge) and Tommy Wilson (Waimai).

The England team included a number of players who are regulars on the New Zealand polo circuit over the northern hemisphere winter - James Biem, Mark Tomlinson, Henry Brett, Luke Tomlinson.
