More than 32,000 Kiwi Smiles To Mark World Dental Health Day

August 2 2006, RANGIORA: At 1.46pm, Monday August 7, history will be made in New Zealand. From Fox Glacier to Tokomaru Bay to Tamaranui to Auckland City, 32,000 Kiwi kids from more than 200 schools all over the country will have just broken the World Record for the largest group of people to simultaneously brush their teeth.

Planned to coincide with World Dental Health Day, The Macleans World Record Toothbrush Challenge gets underway at exactly 1.45pm on Monday August 7. To qualify as record breakers, brushers have to keep brushing for one minute. The official start and finish will be announced on the Classic Hits Radio Network around the country.

The record attempt has been organised by a small team of volunteers based at Southbrook School in Rangiora, North Canterbury. It’s a huge logistical exercise, but with all the preparations now in place, Principal Rod Thompson is confident the Kiwis can do it.

The current record stands at 31,424, and was set in 2003 in Germany. Thompson says with 32,000 free toothbrushes distributed to Kiwi kids by Macleans, as well as involvement of thousands of parents, the record is there for the taking.

“We are set to smash the German’s effort” says Thompson. “We have been inundated with enquiries from schools all over the country, and we’ve asked them all to encourage parents to join in. We’re very confident we will take the record, no question about it.”

All of the children participating will receive a gift pack of Macleans oral care, stickers and a certificate to mark the occasion, as well as the honour of being recognised as a Guinness World Record-breaker.

“What started off as a plan to raise funds for its two senior classes to travel on an educational trip to Wellington for a week, has now turned into a matter of national pride” says Thompson. “This is a day all of the children participating will remember for the rest of their lives: and a minute in time that most Dental Nurses could only dream of!”
