Nice Advert – Pity You Missed The Point!
Who among Auckland’s 1.2 million people doesn’t want a better Auckland than we have now?
The Mayor Dick Hubbard badly misses the point. “Auckland needs many of the things he is putting on the table but we can no longer expect rate payers alone to keep on funding this development,” says Michael Barnett, chief executive of the Auckland Regional Chamber of Commerce.
“There are other options for funding Auckland’s future that the Mayor and the City has ignored, and which will spread the cost more fairly across a greater number of Aucklanders. Future generations will also use these assets – they should help pay for them, which can be arranged if debt funding is used better.”
Auckland City is one of New Zealand’s largest enterprises. It is time for the City to be more innovative, creative and visionary in the way it funds major projects.
“More of the same is unacceptable. If the City wants to be a proper international City, it should be looking at other options than ratepayers for funding its activities.”
The region has 1.2 million people and just 450,000 rate payers who have the good fortune to own a property – the Mayor is unfair to ratepayers by expecting them to meet all the costs while other Aucklanders also share in the benefits,” said Mr Barnett.
