Econet requests spectrum discussion to be continued

Econet Wireless New Zealand (Econet) has complimented the Ministry of Economic Development on its open-minded request for submissions on Broadband Wireless Spectrum Use.

Econet Chief Project Director, Tex Edwards, commented, “It reflects very well on government policy agencies when they fertilise debate in an open and frank manner”.

Econet has responded with an innovative idea of a trip to Kinshasa, Congo, so the MED can see a successful spectrum allocation policy firsthand. This would be followed by a trip to all the major equipment manufacturers in Europe to understand the best consumer equipment and spectrum propositions.

The thrust of Econet’s submission to the MED has been that spectrum management must be passed to the Regulator’s office. Respectfully the Commissioner of Telecommunications has only ever had half a toolbox. Econet’s strapline in the 40-page submission is, “It’s time to understand the interplay between spectrum management, competition behaviour rules and regulated network access, in order to create competition for a positive consumer outcome.”

Econet is confident the MED will continue its policy analysis with an open mind, and fix up the problems created by a GSM monopolist, thereby focussing on producing a positive outcome for consumers.
