ISPANZ welcomes InternetNZ submissions on LLU, operational separation and competition law reform

ISPANZ (the Internet Service Providers Association of New Zealand Inc.) today welcomed the submissions by InternetNZ, released yesterday, on the Telecommunications Amendment Bill currently before Parliament.

“This is a quality contribution to an important debate: how the telecommunications industry can best be structured to promote competition and investment,” said David Diprose, President of ISPANZ.

“InternetNZ’s explanation of the British Telecom model and the differences between this and what Telecom is proposing are an important and timely contribution to the debate. An effective operational separation model is vital, and to be effective it needs to incorporate Telecom’s network. Their own proposal does not do this.

“Our members are looking forward to the opportunities to invest provided by the legislation. LLU in particular will lead to better services for hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders.

“Finally, the additional competition law measures InternetNZ recommends will help tackle the incumbent’s market power in a more effective way. We endorse them.

“ISPANZ is presenting its submissions to the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee at Parliament on Wednesday. We will reiterate our support for InternetNZ’s position then,” concluded David Diprose.
