Business welcomes electricity grid upgrade decision
“This is an
important first step in a ‘must happen’ process to
provide Auckland and North Auckland with a guaranteed,
reliable electricity supply system.”
Welcoming the
Electricity Commission’s Notice of Intention to approve
Transpower’s revised proposal for a new transmission line
from Waikato to Auckland, Auckland Chamber of Commerce CEO
Michael Barnett said that from a business perspective it was
extremely important that the region secured a long-term
reputation for having a reliable electricity supply
system.
The Commission’s decision to approve the revised
Transpower application is likely to have gone through a
robust process and provide a solution that will meet the
best interests of the wider community and have the support
of business.
The Chamber recognises that there is still a
public consultation process to be undertaken and a number of
technical issues are required to be worked through by the
Commission.
“With warnings of power shortages predicted in the next few years if the upgrade does not proceed, we urge that the next step be undertaken in a timely way,” said Mr Barnett.
