Vodafone New Zealand’s results for the three months to 31 December 2007 show it picked up an extra 89,000 customers – and Vodafone attributes the rise to the popularity of its BestMate service.

BestMate was launched in November and allows customers access to unlimited voice, text and video calling to a nominated Vodafone number for $6 per month. Video calling on mobile phones is a service only available in New Zealand to Vodafone customers.

Customers are using their phones more, but paying less than they did a year ago.

CFO James Marsh says customers are able to get a lot more for their money, in a year where prices have come down dramatically and lower mobile termination rates were introduced. Voice usage in the last quarter was 672 million minutes – up from 616 million a year ago. Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) is down compared to last year, at $50.7 compared to $51.2.

“It’s been an excellent quarter for us. We bought ihug, we launched Vodafone 3G broadband so people can access broadband while on the move, and we launched the first of a raft of great new offers, such as BestMate.”

“Having the power of Vodafone Group behind us means we can offer the best range of handsets in New Zealand, the best international roaming and we have the ability to make a long term investment in New Zealand,” says James Marsh.
