Emerald Goes Green

Emerald Goes Green

Auckland 8 February 2007 – Since it’s opening in June 2006, the Emerald Hotel in Gisborne has been leading the way with an innovative “chemical free” cleaning programme.

Whilst not 100% free from chemicals, Emerald General Manager, Anne Bastiaans estimates that a “25% reduction of chemical use is achieved through the products we use, in comparison with conventional methods of cleaning”.

The chemicals used with this system are eco-friendly and virtually free of any residue of harmful chemicals. Not only is this system better for the environment, but Emerald is doing what is good for their staff too. According to Anne, the fact that they use very few chemicals is important to the house-keeping staff and issues like skin rashes and dermatitis are now virtually non-existent. “At least one employee has joined the hotel for specifically this reason”, says Anne.

This new cleaning system is labour-saving, a faster and more efficient alternative for places that need regular cleaning often. Not only that, this innovative cleaning system is super-hygienic too, used in Auckland Hospital for over 3 years and recently introduced to both Wellington and Greymouth Hospital’s.

Paul Senior, from Hygiene Technology, suppliers of the new cleaning system, says that “the system has mainly been marketed so far to hospitals and food factories and we are only just beginning now to market it to hotels and motels. The Emerald Hotel is leading the way as far as eco-friendly cleaning in hotels goes. It is a new market for us which holds exciting promise.”

The system preserves surfaces, by not introducing chemicals that have a degrading effect and destroy surfaces integrity. Instead, surfaces retain shine and stay in good order, which is important in the hospitality industry, where so much is about presentation.

The system uses micro fibre materials, which are deep cleaning and long lasting, cutting the dirt off surfaces, instead of leaving a smeary mess of chemical residue, which tends to attract more dirt.

The Emerald Hotel are pleased that staff are benefiting and are happy with the results of their eco-friendly cleaning system, an industry fore-runner and just one ‘green’ initiative among many that the hotel is ensuring it takes.
